Green Roosevelt

A network of friends of the Roosevelt Environmental Commission

We have a wren birdhouse hanging from the eves down to our kitchen window, the opening facing so that we can watch all of the activities. Ever year we have tenants and can watch everything, from their building of the nest (which is often very funny, when they try to maneuver long twigs into the opening), to the feeding of the female hatching the eggs to stuffing food into the craws of the frantic chicks. When they grow we can watch each of the chicks competing for the food their parents bring. When each bird finally gets the courage to come out and attempt to fly the parents keep an eye on it, and follow its activities, probably from their peeps, and feed it more on the ground. Sometimes after the birds all fly away we clean the birdhouse and we some years have a second family who set to work. It is amazing that the wrens do not seem to care that our eyes are peering out the window right into their little home!
